Presentation

The Master of Fine Arts Program of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile aims to be an interdisciplinary program, with an emphasis on a cultural axis  – Latin America — and two modalities of academic action: theoretical research and artistic practice; in a faculty that tries to extend the epistemological perspectives of the practicing disciplines: visual arts, music and theatre. For this purpose, it has a high level of academic staff with postgraduate studies in Chile and overseas and active in the production of knowledge through work and theory.

In its three years of existence, the program has managed to consolidate a dialog with Chilean and international cultural production, particularly Latin American, by means of a body of invited professors and a sustained collaboration with universities of the region. A fundamental tool in this respect has been the magazine Cátedra de Artes , official publication of the master program that receives contributions from known national and foreign scholars from different disciplines related to the arts.

In keeping with the three academic units that make up the Faculty of Arts – the School of Art, the Theater School and the Music Institute — the  Program offers the following disciplinary lines, each of which subdivides into more specific areas of work:

Theatre

- Contemporary laboratory of dramaturgic and scenic research and experimentation, in which the writing of texts and the production of theatrical work linked to the Chilean and Latin American context, both in the performance field and in the creation of dramatic texts, are developed.
- Theoretical modality developed around an area we term cultural theory of the drama and performance: its actualization in the Latin America scene.

Music

- Musicology, which offers the space to develop research centered on problems linked to colonial, erudite, popular and religious music of Chile and Latin America.
- Composition, oriented to develop new ideas and productions directed at extending the contemporary repertoire at the professional level.

Visuals Arts

- The creation of a visual work, accompanied by a thesis.
- The realization of a theoretical thesis in history of the art, or in topics associated with heritage and its influence on Chilean art.

The Program accepts multidisciplinary projects that integrate these areas.

The Master Program in Fine Arts is accredited by the CNA from October 2008 to September 2010.

Curricular Structure

According to the proposed focuses and modalities, the program has a flexible structure aimed at: 1) theoretical research, and 2) performance productions. The first modality consists of the construction, questioning and analysis of the previously formalized objects of study, and is aimed at, among others, musicologists, art theorists, historians, heritage conservers and professionals interested in contemporary theater studies. The second modality is understood as artistic practice combined with systematic reflection, and is aimed at, among others, visual artists, composers, dramatists, actors and theater directors.

The program is composed of four academic semesters and requires passing 150 credits that are distributed in Required Courses and Elective Courses of Specialization. The latter courses can be interdisciplinary or specialized in one of the disciplines integrated in the master program (theater, visual arts or music), which allows the student to structure his/her study program according to his/her own interests and needs.

MASTER OF FINE ARTS CURRICULAR DIAGRAM

Courses of the program

First semester

Cultural Identity in Chile and Latin America - 10 credits – Required: Theoretic course that reflects on the principal current ideas and orientations of cultural production in Latin America. The course addresses the relationship between civil society and the forms of abstract and metaphoric production of culture, their forms of development and possible orientation and future directions.

Seminar I  - 20 credits – Required:  The seminar course seeks to collectively discuss ideas for possible final projects. With the objective of identifying a problem as a central matter of a thesis or project, the themes of each student will be discussed by the group, with the possible formal or technical solutions of performance products, as well as formal and methodological structures for the thesis projects. This course thus represents the first step toward what will be the final project or thesis.

An Elective Specialization Course - 10 credits

Second semester

The Arts in Chile - 10 credits – Required: The course addresses the route and development of the visual arts, theater and music in the Chile of today, analyzing the social, ideological and technical concomitants that we need to confront in order to resolve the production of works in the country.

Seminar II - 20 credits – Required: This seminar seeks to consolidate the idea of a professional project or final thesis initiated in a previous course. The student organizes the material that he/she has gathered and structures a logical work plan. The student also researches documentary sources and theoretical, visual, musical and/or dramatic references that can be linked to the idea to be developed, to be converted in the following semester into a formal project with possibilities of being carried out under the methodological and technical conditions required in the Program.

An Elective Specialization Course - 10 credits

Third semester

The student should initiate his/her thesis or project work.

Thesis I – 20 credits – Required: Tutorial course aimed at giving substance to the research. From the work initiated in the previous courses, the student begins to solve the objectives and questions, perfecting the methodologies and the theoretical framework. With the guidance of the thesis director, he/she can re-orient the bibliographical and source search and even modify part of the general structure of his/her research

Project I - 20 credits – Required: Workshop aimed at developing an artistic proposal with professional rigor, understood as the beginning of the final master project.  In this course, the student also has to initiate writing the master thesis in which he/she will report on the processes and ideas emerging from his/her artistic production.

Two Elective Specialization courses: 10 credits each

Fourth semester

Thesis II - 20 credits – Required: At the end of this course, the student will have to have finished his/her research, according to the requirements of the program and the goals that he/she has set.

Project II - 20 credits – Required: At the end of this course the student should conclude his/her project and the thesis initiated in the previous semester.  The project, developed in any discipline of the arts or a combination of these, will have to be performed or exhibited with the professional rigor that it is expected from the postgraduate level.

An Elective Specialization course - 10 credits
