Special Courses
Tailor made These courses are specially designed for institutions on request. Courses` layouts and contents are designed to fit the communication needs of foreign university students and of professionals working in Chile. The courses can be organized either on an intensive basis, with 30 to 40 hours over a period of two weeks, or be conceived as support courses with two or three weekly sessions of two hours throughout the academic year.
In addition, attention is given to intercultural issues such as the analysis of the culturally based communication styles and analysis of language performance particular to certain social domains. Professors organize debates and panel discussions with local students as well as other interactive activities with the local community inside and outside the university. Cultural visits are arranged such as seeing theater plays .
The Spanish Language and Culture Programm are in session the entire year.

Intensive Spanish Course
Scheduled in february and july each year only if there`s a minimum of students who want to register them. The next Intensive Spanish Course will take place in the last two weeks of July, at campus San Joaquín. If you are accepted for the exchange or study abroad programs and you want to take intensive spanish classes before the semester begins, please send an email to exchange@uc.cl.
Semestral Courses Placement Test Once in Chile, all the students have to take a placement test if they want to register any semestral spanish course. The placement test is usually given on the first week of each semester. Spanish classes beginning
First semester UC (march-july): second week of march .
Second semester UC (august- december): second week of august. Reinforcement Level Course ( free of charge only for bilateral exchange students)
This course is free of charge for students from universities that have a bilateral exchange agreement with UC. They have to :
-Belong to the category bilateral exchange student
-Take the placement test to assess their level of spanish
The Bilateral exchange students selected for this course will be informed in due time.
The Reinforcement Level course will have 2 classes a week of 1 hour and a half each, during 13 weeks. It is a general course which covers essential spanish grammar and oral spanish practice to develop basic spanish communication skills.
For students who come from universities with no bilateral exchange agreement with UC (study abroad student), they have to pay the total cost of this course. The Spanish Program offers the following paid courses for all the students who have taken the placement test. Advanced Level and Superior Level Courses
Advanced level course and Superior level course, these will have 2 classes a week of 1 hour and a half each, during 13 weeks. These courses cover applied grammar and discourse analysis to develop skills in language use for different texts and contexts of the academic life.
The development of formal and specialized language for the Social Sciences is encouraged. The activities and tasks support each student to acquire stylistic resources to express ideas in formal spanish language in different kinds of texts. In order to do this, paraphrasing of abstract language and reconstruction of texts as well as oral and listening exposition and discussion tasks are exercised.
Higher Level Course
The Higher level course will have a two-hour class once a week during 15 weeks.
This course encourages the development of text writing strategies and stylistic analysis criteria of different kinds of texts in order to improve the production of written text and to gain better lexical skills. During group activities coherence and concision are exercised to reach agreements concerning communicative goals. Correct spelling, punctuation and accent language use rules, grammar and lexical resources for precision and other frequent errors are checked.
As the Universidad Católica de Chile is committed to excellence in teaching, students who take part in the Spanish Language Programm are asked to evaluate their classes at the end of every course.

Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language Accreditation
The Program of Spanish for Foreigners at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is in charge of organising the exams of DELE (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language) which are issued by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the “Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia” of Spain. DELE are the only official accreditations of the degree of fluency and command of Spanish acknowledged internationally and with indefinite validity for non native spanish speakers.
