Roque Esteban Scarpa Straboni  (1914-1995)

 

Born in Punta Arenas, at the age of 15 he started studying Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Universidad de Chile, though he never graduated. His interest in teaching led him to study Education at Universidad Católica, while his love for words led him to complete a PhD in Literature at Universidad de Chile. He worked as a teacher in schools and as a university professor at Universidad Católica and also at Universidad de Chile. He was also involved in the production of school texts and he contributed greatly to public libraries as director of the DIBAM (Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos). He was one of the main researchers of Gabriela Mistral and has received many recognitions, the most important being the Premio Nacional de Literatura (National Award for Literature) in 1980.
