José Balmes Parramón (1927 - 2016)


A Spanish painter who arrived in Chile in 1939 with his parents as Civil War refugees. He studied in the School of Fine Arts of Universidad de Chile and obtained the Chilean nationality in 1947. From 1954 to 1955 he studied in France and Italy. In 1986, he took a position as Professor of Painting at the Escuela de Arte (School of Arts), Universidad Católica. He has been the recipient of several distinctions for his life achievements and his works of art, which portray a critical testimony of human actions. Among these distinctions is the official recognition of the Chilean Government granting him the Premio Nacional de Arte (National Award in Arts in 1999.  He also received the Altazor in 2002.
