Carlos Botto Vallarino (1923 - 2004)


A Chilean pianist and composer. In 1948 he enrolled in the Conservatorio Nacional de Música (National Music Conservatory).  In 1956, after receiving a scholarship from the Guggenheim foundation, he went on to complete post-graduate studies with Luigi Dallapiccola, in New York. He was Director of the Conservatorio Nacional (National Conservatory) and President of the Juventudes Musicales de Chile (Chilean Youth Musical Association).  He devoted his academic career mainly working at the Facultad de Artes (Faculty of Arts),  Universidad de Chile, the Instituto de Música (Institute of Music) UC and the Escuela Moderna de Música (Modern School of Music). In 1996, he received the Premio Nacional de Artes Musicales (National Award for Music) for his creative work and long-lasting contribution to Chile's musical heritage.
