Manuel Antonio Garretón (1943)


Alumni of the Sociology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and PhD in Social Sciences from the L'Ecole des Hautes Etudes de París. He was the dean and director of the Centro de Estudios de la Realidad Nacional (Center for Studies of the National Reality) and of the Revista Cuadernos de la Realidad Nacional (Journal of National Reality) at UC until 1973. He has written more than 40 books on his own and with other authors. He has also edited and compiled books, and published many articles in magazines, which have been translated to many languages. In 2007 he received the Premio Nacional de Humanidades y Ciencias Sociales (National Award for Humanities and Social Sciences) for his contribution to the development of these fields in Chile and for his unique creativity and permanent output.
