Juan Carlos Castilla Zenobi (1940)

Juan Carlos Castilla is a Professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Universidad Católica and has a PhD in Marine Biology from North Wales University, United Kingdom.
Doctor Castilla studies mollusk behaviour within species such as the Chilean abalone (Concholepas concholepas), and the conservation of coastal resources.
Using this animal as model and with the idea of researching what happens in a coastal area free from human intervention, he began one of his most emblematic projects: the Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas, ECIM (Coastal Station for Marine Research).
His most significant contribution has been the scientific knowledge base that has served to set the national legislation on the management of marine coastal resources. In 2010, he received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas (National Award for Applied and Technological Sciences).
