Walter Hanisch Espíndola (1916 -2001)


Jesuit priest and historian, Walter Hanisch studied at the Seminario in Santiago and then became a member of the Compañía de Jesús (Society of Jesus). He was ordained in Buenos Aires. He received a PhD in Theology from the Universidad Católica and was the founder of the Institute of History, UC where he taught, and did research on history in the Vatican library and at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. In 1956, he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Historia (National Award for History) for his studies on religious history and philosophical ideas in Chile.
