I. Exchange programs

Due to the modern world's requirements for professionals, intellectuals, and scientists with the capacity to interact efficiently within highly heterogeneous cultural groups, UC's policy is to support every opportunity leading foreign students and its own students to become familiar with other cultures.

The main purpose of the Office of International Programs is to promote, develop, organize, and establish formal agreements for cooperation and exchange with foreign universities. UC is deeply committed to offering students from around the world the opportunity to participate in graduate and undergraduate programs at UC, as well as to provide students the intellectual and cultural benefits of a study abroad experience. Programs are designed according to the needs of the foreign universities and the regulations of UC.

Due to this flexibility, in the past 14 years UC has come to formal agreements with 236 universities from 38 countries, which has led to more than 7800 international graduate and undergraduate students attending courses at the university.

In August 1994, UC started formally exchange programs with several institutions in order to offer graduate and undergraduate students the opportunity to study one semester in a foreign university. From 1994 to 2005, more than 2.700 students have attended universities in the United States, México, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

PROGRAM FORMATS

Academic programs for exchange students can be set up in a variety of ways. The Office of International Programs prides itself on its flexibility in meeting the needs of all types of programs. Formats developed thus far include:

Regular Courses that require students to enroll for the semester as full-time UC students, attending standard UC classes with their Chilean peers.

Special Courses are tailor-made, may have variable length, and can be offered in a second language.

Mixed programs offer students the chance to take advantage of both of the above mentioned systems. Students can enroll in some standard UC courses, but may also receive instruction in classes designed to meet their specific needs.

Visiting Research Students (Visiting Scholars)

Foreign undergraduate and graduate students may undertake one stay at UC working on a topic supervised by a professor on the student's main subject of interest.
