His Eminence Monsignor Ricardo Ezzatti Andrello



Monsignor Ricardo Ezzatti was born on January 7, 1942 at Campiglia dei Berice, Vicenza, Italy.
In 1959 he came to Chile and immediately entered the Novitiate of the Salesian Congregation in Quilpué. There he studied philosophy and pedagogy and later went on to study Sacred Theology at the Pontificia Universidad Salesiana in Rome. He then went to France and finished a master’s degree in Religious Pedagogy at the University of Strasbourg. Later, he received the degree of State Professor of Religion and Philosophy from the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso.
On March 18, 1970 he was ordained priest and began his pastoral mission in Valdivia. He stayed in this city until 1973, when he was elected Superior Father of the Religious Community and Headmaster of the Salesian School in Concepción.
From 1978 to 1983 he lived in Santiago and he served as Director of the Main Seminary of the Congregation, as well as Provincial Counselor and Director of the Catechetical Experiences and Studies Center. During this time he began working as Professor of Pastoral Services Orientation in the Faculty of Theology of our University.

He was also Bishop of Valdivia and, in 2001, Pope Jean Paul II named him Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago and Apostolic Administrator of Valdivia.

In 2006, the President of Chile at that time, Michelle Bahcelet, granted him Chilean nationality as a special grace and, by the end of that year, Pope Benedict XVI named him Archbishop of the Archdiocese of the Santísima Concepción.

In November 2010, he was elected President of the Episcopal Conference of Chile for a period of three years, and on December 15, 2010 the Holy Father Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Santiago de Chile.
